We fabricate the foundations for offshore wind energy

Offshore wind energy is the future. Below sea level lies a piece of technical ingenuity, made by Sif.These are the steel foundations underpinning offshore wind turbines. The dimensions of these foundations, called monopiles, are impressive to say the least: a tube can be up to 120 metres long, with an average diameter of 9 to 11 metres!

Building such an enormous steel tube demands a lot of technical know-how and expertise. We’re involved in the engineering, rolling, welding, coating, logistics and storage of the foundations and connecting pieces. That’s where close-knit teamwork really shows its value. Together, we produce approximately 200 XXXL monopiles per year. Each foundation is uniquely designed depending on its position off-shore and weighs an average of 2,000 to 2,500 tonnes.

The start of a success story

Sif was founded in 1948 by Jan Jacob Schmeitz. For a long time, Sif was a family-owned business that produced tubular steel structures, including pressure vessels. We take pride in our history and the 75 years of technical know-how and experience we have accumulated.

Sif became a listed company in 2016. Since 2000, we have been focused on monopile foundations for offshore wind farms.  We achieve this with around 700 skilled men and women at two production locations in the Netherlands: Roermond and 2de Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. Each location has its own specific area of expertise, and combined we can process up to 500,000 tonnes of steel per year.

Roermond specialises in rolling and welding foundation parts, while our other site on the 2de Maasvlakte is the largest monopile factory in the world. In this state-of-the-art facility, we utilize automated processes, modern rolling mills, and innovative welding technologies to assemble all components into an impressive final product.  We also have a large storage area and logistics facilities at the 2de Maasvlakte, so we’re able to offer customers turnkey solutions.
